Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Triveni Engineering & Industries (NSE:TRIVENI). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

Triveni Engineering & Industries's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Triveni Engineering & Industries has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. It's good to see that Triveni Engineering & Industries's EPS have grown from ₹14.06 to ₹16.54 over twelve months. I doubt many would complain about that 18% gain.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Unfortunately, Triveni Engineering & Industries's revenue dropped 13% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 10% to 13%. That's not ideal.

Are Triveni Engineering & Industries Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Triveni Engineering & Industries insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 40% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I'm always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. And their holding is extremely valuable at the current share price, totalling ₹25b. That means they have plenty of their own capital riding on the performance of the business!
