United Spirits' (NSE:MCDOWELL-N) Stock Price Has Reduced 13% In The Past Three Years
For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But its virtually certain that sometimes you will buy stocks that fall short of the market average returns. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term United Spirits Limited (NSE:MCDOWELL-N) shareholders, since the share price is down 13% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 14%. The silver lining is that the stock is up 2.5% in about a week.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During the three years that the share price fell, United Spirits' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 34% each year. This fall in the EPS is worse than the 5% compound annual share price fall. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have previously priced some of the drop in. With a P/E ratio of 228.10, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

A Different Perspective
United Spirits shareholders are down 0.5% for the year, but the market itself is up 19%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.5% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with United Spirits (at least 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
