There's No Escaping LT Foods Limited's (NSE:LTFOODS) Muted Earnings Despite A 27% Share Price Rise
LT Foods Limited (NSE:LTFOODS) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 100% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, LT Foods' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.8x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 33x and even P/E's above 64x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
LT Foods certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as depressed as LT Foods' is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 37% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 99% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 7.1% as estimated by the sole analyst watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 25%, which is noticeably more attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that LT Foods' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Final Word
Shares in LT Foods are going to need a lot more upward momentum to get the company's P/E out of its slump. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
We've established that LT Foods maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
