The board of Manappuram Finance Limited (NSE:MANAPPURAM) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹0.85 on the 13th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.2%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Manappuram Finance's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Manappuram Finance was earning enough to cover the dividend, but free cash flows weren't positive. In general, we consider cash flow to be more important than earnings, so we would be cautious about relying on the sustainability of this dividend.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 44.8% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 11% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Manappuram Finance Has A Solid Track Record

The company has a sustained record of paying dividends with very little fluctuation. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ₹1.50 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ₹3.40. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 8.5% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing very nicely for a number of years, and has given its shareholders some nice income in their portfolios.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Manappuram Finance has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 19% per annum. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for Manappuram Finance's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.

Our Thoughts On Manappuram Finance's Dividend

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
