IIFL Capital Services (NSE:IIFLSEC) sheds 5.1% this week, as yearly returns fall more in line with earnings growth
We think all investors should try to buy and hold high quality multi-year winners. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. For example, the IIFL Capital Services Limited (NSE:IIFLSEC) share price is up a whopping 695% in the last half decade, a handsome return for long term holders. This just goes to show the value creation that some businesses can achieve. Unfortunately, though, the stock has dropped 5.1% over a week. However, this might be related to the overall market decline of 3.2% in a week. Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.
While the stock has fallen 5.1% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
During five years of share price growth, IIFL Capital Services achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 27% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 51% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for IIFL Capital Services the TSR over the last 5 years was 828%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that IIFL Capital Services has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 141% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 56% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with IIFL Capital Services (including 1 which is a bit unpleasant) .
