Housing and Urban Development (NSE:HUDCO) shareholders have earned a 96% CAGR over the last three years
Generally speaking, investors are inspired to be stock pickers by the potential to find the big winners. Not every pick can be a winner, but when you pick the right stock, you can win big. One such superstar is Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited (NSE:HUDCO), which saw its share price soar 546% in three years. Meanwhile the share price is 1.8% higher than it was a week ago. Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Housing and Urban Development, it has a TSR of 656% for the last 3 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

We regret to report that Housing and Urban Development shareholders are down 29% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 1.1%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 54%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend.
