Equitas Holdings Limited (NSE:EQUITAS) shareholders will doubtless be very grateful to see the share price up 56% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been less than pleasing. After all, the share price is down 50% in the last three years, significantly under-performing the market.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the unfortunate three years of share price decline, Equitas Holdings actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 47% per year. This is quite a puzzle, and suggests there might be something temporarily buoying the share price. Or else the company was over-hyped in the past, and so its growth has disappointed.

It's worth taking a look at other metrics, because the EPS growth doesn't seem to match with the falling share price.

We note that, in three years, revenue has actually grown at a 21% annual rate, so that doesn't seem to be a reason to sell shares. It's probably worth investigating Equitas Holdings further; while we may be missing something on this analysis, there might also be an opportunity.

A Different Perspective

Over the last year, Equitas Holdings shareholders took a loss of 25%, including dividends. In contrast the market gained about 18%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Shareholders have lost 14% per year over the last three years, so the share price drop has become steeper, over the last year; a potential symptom of as yet unsolved challenges. Although Baron Rothschild famously said to "buy when there's blood in the streets, even if the blood is your own", he also focusses on high quality stocks with solid prospects. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
