The five-year decline in earnings for Dhunseri Investments NSE:DHUNINV) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 947% over that period

It might be of some concern to shareholders to see the Dhunseri Investments Limited (NSE:DHUNINV) share price down 13% in the last month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. In that time, the share price has soared some 927% higher! Arguably, the recent fall is to be expected after such a strong rise. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.

Although Dhunseri Investments has shed ₹1.6b from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Dhunseri Investments' earnings per share are down 0.8% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the decline in earnings per share is not representative of how the business has changed over the years. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.

We doubt the modest 0.1% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. It is not great to see that revenue has dropped by 38% per year over five years. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. As it happens, Dhunseri Investments' TSR for the last 5 years was 947%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Dhunseri Investments has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 147% in the last twelve months. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 60% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Dhunseri Investments (1 is potentially serious) that you should be aware of.
