Angel One Limited's (NSE:ANGELONE) Share Price Boosted 25% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Angel One Limited (NSE:ANGELONE) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 25% gain in the last month alone. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 7.5% isn't as impressive.
Although its price has surged higher, Angel One's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.5x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 34x and even P/E's above 64x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
With earnings growth that's superior to most other companies of late, Angel One has been doing relatively well. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings performance might be less impressive moving forward. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Angel One's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 24%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 178% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 13% each year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 19% each year growth forecast for the broader market.
With this information, we can see why Angel One is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on while the company is potentially eyeing a less prosperous future.
The Key Takeaway
Despite Angel One's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
As we suspected, our examination of Angel One's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
