If You Like EPS Growth Then Check Out Aditya Birla Capital (NSE:ABCAPITAL) Before It's Too Late
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Aditya Birla Capital (NSE:ABCAPITAL). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Aditya Birla Capital's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. We can see that in the last three years Aditya Birla Capital grew its EPS by 9.5% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. I note that Aditya Birla Capital's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. While we note Aditya Birla Capital's EBIT margins were flat over the last year, revenue grew by a solid 26% to ₹154b. That's a real positive.

Are Aditya Birla Capital Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that Aditya Birla Capital insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. As a group insiders own shares currently valued at ₹1.0b, which amounts to 0.4% of the business. While that is a good sign, it doesn't seem so impressive when you consider that the CEO was paid ₹273m in the year to .
Should You Add Aditya Birla Capital To Your Watchlist?
As I already mentioned, Aditya Birla Capital is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. What about risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Aditya Birla Capital (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
