India Tourism Development (NSE:ITDC) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year

The board of India Tourism Development Corporation Limited (NSE:ITDC) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹2.90 on the 15th of October, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield 0.5%, which is above the industry average.

India Tourism Development's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. However, prior to this announcement, India Tourism Development's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 48.5% if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 22% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was ₹0.50 in 2015, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ₹2.90. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 19% a year over that time. India Tourism Development has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.

The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. India Tourism Development has impressed us by growing EPS at 48% per year over the past five years. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.

We Really Like India Tourism Development's Dividend

Overall, a dividend increase is always good, and we think that India Tourism Development is a strong income stock thanks to its track record and growing earnings. Distributions are quite easily covered by earnings, which are also being converted to cash flows. All in all, this checks a lot of the boxes we look for when choosing an income stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. However, there are other things to consider for investors when analysing stock performance. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for India Tourism Development that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
