HLV (NSE:HLVLTD) shareholders are still up 183% over 5 years despite pulling back 10% in the past week
While HLV Limited (NSE:HLVLTD) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 16% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that shareholders have received really good returns over the last five years. Indeed, the share price is up an impressive 183% in that time. So while it's never fun to see a share price fall, it's important to look at a longer time horizon. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' During the last half decade, HLV became profitable. That kind of transition can be an inflection point that justifies a strong share price gain, just as we have seen here.

A Different Perspective
It's good to see that HLV has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 119% in the last twelve months. That's better than the annualised return of 23% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
