Stock Analysis

Should You Be Adding Silgo Retail (NSE:SILGO) To Your Watchlist Today?

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Silgo Retail (NSE:SILGO). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Quickly Is Silgo Retail Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, Silgo Retail's EPS has grown 30% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Silgo Retail shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 8.7% to 11%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Since Silgo Retail is no giant, with a market capitalization of ₹527m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Silgo Retail Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that Silgo Retail insiders own a meaningful share of the business. In fact, they own 84% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. Of course, Silgo Retail is a very small company, with a market cap of only ₹527m. So despite a large proportional holding, insiders only have ₹442m worth of stock. That's not a huge stake in absolute terms, but it should help keep insiders aligned with other shareholders.

It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations under ₹15b, like Silgo Retail, the median CEO pay is around ₹3.1m.

The CEO of Silgo Retail was paid just ₹2.4m in total compensation for the year ending . You could consider this pay as somewhat symbolic, which suggests the CEO does not need a lot of compensation to stay motivated. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Does Silgo Retail Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, Silgo Retail's raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. If that's not enough, consider also that the CEO pay is quite reasonable, and insiders are well-invested alongside other shareholders. Each to their own, but I think all this makes Silgo Retail look rather interesting indeed. However, before you get too excited we've discovered 7 warning signs for Silgo Retail (4 don't sit too well with us!) that you should be aware of.
