Introducing Relaxo Footwears (NSE:RELAXO), The Stock That Zoomed 266% In The Last Five Years
The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on the bright side, if you buy shares in a high quality company at the right price, you can gain well over 100%. Long term Relaxo Footwears Limited (NSE:RELAXO) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 266% in five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 26% gain in the last three months. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 22% in 90 days).

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
Over half a decade, Relaxo Footwears managed to grow its earnings per share at 9.6% a year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 30% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This optimism is visible in its fairly high P/E ratio of 99.44.

What About Dividends?
As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Relaxo Footwears the TSR over the last 5 years was 269%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Relaxo Footwears shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 22% over one year. And that does include the dividend. However, that falls short of the 30% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Relaxo Footwears , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
