TeamLease Services (NSE:TEAMLEASE) Might Have The Makings Of A Multi-Bagger
There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. So when we looked at TeamLease Services (NSE:TEAMLEASE) and its trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for TeamLease Services, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.10 = ₹774m ÷ (₹15b - ₹6.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2021).
So, TeamLease Services has an ROCE of 10.0%. On its own that's a low return on capital but it's in line with the industry's average returns of 10.0%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
We're glad to see that ROCE is heading in the right direction, even if it is still low at the moment. Over the last five years, returns on capital employed have risen substantially to 10.0%. The amount of capital employed has increased too, by 112%. The increasing returns on a growing amount of capital is common amongst multi-baggers and that's why we're impressed.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that TeamLease Services has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 47%, which we'd consider pretty high. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
Our Take On TeamLease Services' ROCE
To sum it up, TeamLease Services has proven it can reinvest in the business and generate higher returns on that capital employed, which is terrific. Since the stock has returned a staggering 336% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. So given the stock has proven it has promising trends, it's worth researching the company further to see if these trends are likely to persist.
