Even With A 35% Surge, Cautious Investors Are Not Rewarding Spectrum Talent Management Limited's (NSE:SPECTSTM) Performance Completely

Despite an already strong run, Spectrum Talent Management Limited (NSE:SPECTSTM) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 35% in the last thirty days. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 13% in the last twelve months.

Even after such a large jump in price, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 33x, you may still consider Spectrum Talent Management as an attractive investment with its 25.5x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Spectrum Talent Management over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Spectrum Talent Management's to be considered reasonable.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 67%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 95% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

It's interesting to note that the rest of the market is similarly expected to grow by 25% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Spectrum Talent Management's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are more bearish than recent times would indicate and have been accepting lower selling prices.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Spectrum Talent Management's P/E close to the market median. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Spectrum Talent Management revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look similar to current market expectations. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the company's performance. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions should normally provide more support to the share price.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 4 warning signs for Spectrum Talent Management (2 don't sit too well with us!) that you need to be mindful of.
