Firstsource Solutions' (NSE:FSL) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
Firstsource Solutions Limited (NSE:FSL) shareholders have seen the share price descend 13% over the month. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been spectacular. In fact, during that period, the share price climbed 546%. Impressive! So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price. We love happy stories like this one. The company should be really proud of that performance!
Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 6.0%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Firstsource Solutions achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 12% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 45% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.
The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).
We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Firstsource Solutions the TSR over the last 5 years was 625%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Firstsource Solutions has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 25% in the last twelve months. That's including the dividend. However, the TSR over five years, coming in at 49% per year, is even more impressive. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders.
