Is Now The Time To Put Zodiac Energy (NSE:ZODIAC) On Your Watchlist?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Zodiac Energy (NSE:ZODIAC). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Quickly Is Zodiac Energy Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Zodiac Energy has grown EPS by 40% per year, over the last three years. That sort of growth never lasts long, but like a shooting star it is well worth watching when it happens.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. Zodiac Energy maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 36% to ₹1.2b. That's progress.

Zodiac Energy isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹1.2b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Zodiac Energy Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. That's because insider buying often indicates that those closest to the company have confidence that the share price will perform well. However, small purchases are not always indicative of conviction, and insiders don't always get it right.

One positive for Zodiac Energy, is that company insiders paid ₹1.7m for shares in the last year. While this isn't much, we also note an absence of sales. Zooming in, we can see that the biggest insider purchase was by Founder Kunjbihari Shah for ₹1.0m worth of shares, at about ₹28.04 per share.

Is Zodiac Energy Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Zodiac Energy's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. Growth investors should find it difficult to look past that strong EPS move. And indeed, it could be a sign that the business is at an inflection point. For me, this situation certainly piques my interest. You still need to take note of risks, for example - Zodiac Energy has 2 warning signs we think you should be aware of.

The good news is that Zodiac Energy is not the only growth stock with insider buying. Here's a list of them... with insider buying in the last three months!
