International Conveyors' (NSE:INTLCONV) Earnings Quality Is Low

Examining Cashflow Against International Conveyors' Earnings

As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.

Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.

Over the twelve months to September 2025, International Conveyors recorded an accrual ratio of 0.34. We can therefore deduce that its free cash flow fell well short of covering its statutory profit, suggesting we might want to think twice before putting a lot of weight on the latter. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of ₹75m despite its profit of ₹677.3m, mentioned above. We saw that FCF was ₹69m a year ago though, so International Conveyors has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past. However, that's not all there is to consider. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that International Conveyors' profit was boosted by unusual items worth ₹862m in the last twelve months. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. We can see that International Conveyors' positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to September 2025. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On International Conveyors' Profit Performance

Summing up, International Conveyors received a nice boost to profit from unusual items, but could not match its paper profit with free cash flow. Considering all this we'd argue International Conveyors' profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
