The five-year decline in earnings for Honda India Power Products NSE:HONDAPOWER) isn't encouraging, but shareholders are still up 150% over that period

Honda India Power Products Limited (NSE:HONDAPOWER) shareholders have seen the share price descend 25% over the month. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. It's fair to say most would be happy with 140% the gain in that time. Generally speaking the long term returns will give you a better idea of business quality than short periods can. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 16%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Honda India Power Products' earnings per share are down 1.0% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the decline in earnings per share is not representative of how the business has changed over the years. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.

We doubt the modest 0.6% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. On the other hand, Honda India Power Products' revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 4.8% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Honda India Power Products, it has a TSR of 150% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Honda India Power Products shareholders gained a total return of 20% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 20% per year for five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 1 warning sign we've spotted with Honda India Power Products .
