I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Elecon Engineering (NSE:ELECON) Passed With Ease
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Elecon Engineering (NSE:ELECON). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Elecon Engineering Growing?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. It certainly is nice to see that Elecon Engineering has managed to grow EPS by 26% per year over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.
Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Elecon Engineering shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 13% to 16%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

While profitability drives the upside, prudent investors always check the balance sheet, too.
Are Elecon Engineering Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Like standing at the lookout, surveying the horizon at sunrise, insider buying, for some investors, sparks joy. This view is based on the possibility that stock purchases signal bullishness on behalf of the buyer. Of course, we can never be sure what insiders are thinking, we can only judge their actions.
One positive for Elecon Engineering, is that company insiders paid ₹2.5m for shares in the last year. While this isn't much, we also note an absence of sales.
Along with the insider buying, another encouraging sign for Elecon Engineering is that insiders, as a group, have a considerable shareholding. Indeed, they hold ₹2.1b worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Those holdings account for over 8.3% of the company; visible skin in the game.
Is Elecon Engineering Worth Keeping An Eye On?
You can't deny that Elecon Engineering has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. Not only that, but we can see that insiders both own a lot of, and are buying more, shares in the company. So it's fair to say I think this stock may well deserve a spot on your watchlist. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for Elecon Engineering that you need to take into consideration.
