I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And AU Small Finance Bank (NSE:AUBANK) Passed With Ease
For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. And in their study titled Who Falls Prey to the Wolf of Wall Street?' Leuz et. al. found that it is 'quite common' for investors to lose money by buying into 'pump and dump' schemes.
In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like AU Small Finance Bank (NSE:AUBANK), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

AU Small Finance Bank's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. Who among us would not applaud AU Small Finance Bank's stratospheric annual EPS growth of 55%, compound, over the last three years? While that sort of growth rate isn't sustainable for long, it certainly catches my attention; like a crow with a sparkly stone.
I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. I note that AU Small Finance Bank's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. AU Small Finance Bank maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 34% to ₹31b. That's progress.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check AU Small Finance Bank's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are AU Small Finance Bank Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
I like company leaders to have some skin in the game, so to speak, because it increases alignment of incentives between the people running the business, and its true owners. As a result, I'm encouraged by the fact that insiders own AU Small Finance Bank shares worth a considerable sum. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at ₹96b. Coming in at 29% of the business, that holding gives insiders a lot of influence, and plenty of reason to generate value for shareholders. So it might be my imagination, but I do sense the glimmer of an opportunity.
It's good to see that insiders are invested in the company, but are remuneration levels reasonable? A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like AU Small Finance Bank with market caps between ₹148b and ₹475b is about ₹46m.
The AU Small Finance Bank CEO received ₹23m in compensation for the year ending . That seems pretty reasonable, especially given its below the median for similar sized companies. CEO remuneration levels are not the most important metric for investors, but when the pay is modest, that does support enhanced alignment between the CEO and the ordinary shareholders. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.
Does AU Small Finance Bank Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
AU Small Finance Bank's earnings have taken off like any random crypto-currency did, back in 2017. The cherry on top is that insiders own a bucket-load of shares, and the CEO pay seems really quite reasonable. The sharp increase in earnings could signal good business momentum. AU Small Finance Bank certainly ticks a few of my boxes, so I think it's probably well worth further consideration. Even so, be aware that AU Small Finance Bank is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those can't be ignored...
Although AU Small Finance Bank certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
