It is a pleasure to report that the Precision Camshafts Limited (NSE:PRECAM) is up 33% in the last quarter. But over the last three years we've seen a quite serious decline. Regrettably, the share price slid 60% in that period. So it is really good to see an improvement. After all, could be that the fall was overdone.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

During the three years that the share price fell, Precision Camshafts' earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 22% each year. This change in EPS is reasonably close to the 26% average annual decrease in the share price. So it seems that investor expectations of the company are staying pretty steady, despite the disappointment. It seems like the share price is reflecting the declining earnings per share.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Precision Camshafts the TSR over the last 3 years was -57%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Precision Camshafts shareholders have gained 30% (in total) over the last year. That includes the value of the dividend. That certainly beats the loss of about 16% per year over three years. We're generally cautious about putting too much weigh on shorter term data, but the recent improvement is definitely a positive. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
