There's no doubt that investing in the stock market is a truly brilliant way to build wealth. But if when you choose to buy stocks, some of them will be below average performers. For example, the OPC Energy Ltd. (TLV:OPCE), share price is up over the last year, but its gain of 54% trails the market return. The longer term returns have not been as good, with the stock price only 12% higher than it was three years ago.

Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last year OPC Energy grew its earnings per share (EPS) by 47%. We note that the earnings per share growth isn't far from the share price growth (of 54%). This makes us think the market hasn't really changed its sentiment around the company, in the last year. It looks like the share price is responding to the EPS.

A Different Perspective

OPC Energy shareholders gained a total return of 54% during the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. The silver lining is that the gain was actually better than the average annual return of 7% per year over five year. It is possible that returns will improve along with the business fundamentals. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand OPC Energy better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that OPC Energy is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those doesn't sit too well with us...
