Partner Communications' (TLV:PTNR) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth
Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. Buying under-rated businesses is one path to excess returns. For example, the Partner Communications Company Ltd. (TLV:PTNR) share price is up 66% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 45% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 50% in the last year.
While this past week has detracted from the company's five-year return, let's look at the recent trends of the underlying business and see if the gains have been in alignment.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the last half decade, Partner Communications became profitable. That's generally thought to be a genuine positive, so investors may expect to see an increasing share price.
The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).
It is of course excellent to see how Partner Communications has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. This free interactive report on Partner Communications' balance sheet strength is a great place to start, if you want to investigate the stock further.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Partner Communications shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 50% over the last year. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 11% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Partner Communications better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider risks, for instance.
