The Returns On Capital At iCon Group (TLV:ICON) Don't Inspire Confidence
Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think iCon Group (TLV:ICON) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for iCon Group:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.18 = ₪59m ÷ (₪701m - ₪376m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
So, iCon Group has an ROCE of 18%. In absolute terms, that's a pretty normal return, and it's somewhat close to the Electronic industry average of 16%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at iCon Group doesn't inspire confidence. Over the last four years, returns on capital have decreased to 18% from 51% four years ago. However it looks like iCon Group might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It's worth keeping an eye on the company's earnings from here on to see if these investments do end up contributing to the bottom line.
On a related note, iCon Group has decreased its current liabilities to 54% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money. Either way, they're still at a pretty high level, so we'd like to see them fall further if possible.
In Conclusion...
Bringing it all together, while we're somewhat encouraged by iCon Group's reinvestment in its own business, we're aware that returns are shrinking. And in the last year, the stock has given away 14% so the market doesn't look too hopeful on these trends strengthening any time soon. All in all, the inherent trends aren't typical of multi-baggers, so if that's what you're after, we think you might have more luck elsewhere.
