It is a pleasure to report that the Utron Ltd (TLV:UTRN) is up 34% in the last quarter. But in truth the last year hasn't been good for the share price. In fact the stock is down 17% in the last year, well below the market return.

View our latest analysis for Utron

Given that Utron didn't make a profit in the last twelve months, we'll focus on revenue growth to form a quick view of its business development. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.

In just one year Utron saw its revenue fall by 28%. That looks pretty grim, at a glance. Shareholders have seen the share price drop 17% in that time. What would you expect when revenue is falling, and it doesn't make a profit? It's hard to escape the conclusion that buyers must envision either growth down the track, cost cutting, or both.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Utron's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Utron hasn't been paying dividends, but its TSR of 3.3% exceeds its share price return of -17%, implying it has either spun-off a business, or raised capital at a discount; thereby providing additional value to shareholders.

A Different Perspective

Utron boasts a total shareholder return of 3.3% for the last year. A substantial portion of that gain has come in the last three months, with the stock up 34% in that time. Demand for the stock from multiple parties is pushing the price higher; it could be that word is getting out about its virtues as a business. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk.
