Origin Enterprises' (ISE:OIZ) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year

Origin Enterprises plc (ISE:OIZ) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 9th of February to €0.1365. This will take the annual payment to 4.8% of the stock price, which is above what most companies in the industry pay.

Origin Enterprises' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings

If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. However, prior to this announcement, Origin Enterprises' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 14.9%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 31% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The annual payment during the last 10 years was €0.173 in 2013, and the most recent fiscal year payment was €0.168. The dividend has shrunk at a rate of less than 1% a year over this period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Unfortunately, Origin Enterprises' earnings per share has been essentially flat over the past five years, which means the dividend may not be increased each year. While EPS growth is quite low, Origin Enterprises has the option to increase the payout ratio to return more cash to shareholders.

In Summary

In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. For example, we've picked out 2 warning signs for Origin Enterprises that investors should know about before committing capital to this stock. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
