Examining Cashflow Against Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. That is not intended to imply we should worry about a positive accrual ratio, but it's worth noting where the accrual ratio is rather high. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
For the year to September 2024, Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d had an accrual ratio of 0.24. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. Over the last year it actually had negative free cash flow of €3.9m, in contrast to the aforementioned profit of €1.28m. We also note that Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d's free cash flow was actually negative last year as well, so we could understand if shareholders were bothered by its outflow of €3.9m. However, we can see that a recent tax benefit, along with unusual items, have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore its accrual ratio.

How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?
Unfortunately (in the short term) Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d saw its profit reduced by unusual items worth €252k. In the case where this was a non-cash charge it would have made it easier to have high cash conversion, so it's surprising that the accrual ratio tells a different story. It's never great to see unusual items costing the company profits, but on the upside, things might improve sooner rather than later. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. If Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d doesn't see those unusual expenses repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to increase over the coming year.
An Unusual Tax Situation
Moving on from the accrual ratio, we note that Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d profited from a tax benefit which contributed €371k to profit. This is of course a bit out of the ordinary, given it is more common for companies to be paying tax than receiving tax benefits! Of course, prima facie it's great to receive a tax benefit. However, the devil in the detail is that these kind of benefits only impact in the year they are booked, and are often one-off in nature. Assuming the tax benefit is not repeated every year, we could see its profitability drop noticeably, all else being equal. So while we think it's great to receive a tax benefit, it does tend to imply an increased risk that the statutory profit overstates the sustainable earnings power of the business.
Our Take On Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d's Profit Performance
Summing up, Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d's unusual items suggest that its statutory earnings were temporarily depressed, while its tax benefit is having the opposite effect, and its accrual ratio indicates a lack of free cash flow relative to profit. After taking into account all the aforementioned observations we think that Losinjska Plovidba Holding d.d's profits probably give a generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability.
