What Shunfeng International Clean Energy Limited's (HKG:1165) 114% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Shunfeng International Clean Energy Limited (HKG:1165) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 114% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 29% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, it's still not a stretch to say that Shunfeng International Clean Energy's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.5x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Renewable Energy industry in Hong Kong, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.6x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/S.

How Has Shunfeng International Clean Energy Performed Recently?

For instance, Shunfeng International Clean Energy's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps investors believe the recent revenue performance is enough to keep in line with the industry, which is keeping the P/S from dropping off. If you like the company, you'd at least be hoping this is the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

How Is Shunfeng International Clean Energy's Revenue Growth Trending?

Shunfeng International Clean Energy's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 39% decrease to the company's top line. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 81% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 5.4% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term revenue results is a sobering picture.

With this information, we find it concerning that Shunfeng International Clean Energy is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.

The Final Word

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Shunfeng International Clean Energy's P/S is back within range of the industry median. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

The fact that Shunfeng International Clean Energy currently trades at a P/S on par with the rest of the industry is surprising to us since its recent revenues have been in decline over the medium-term, all while the industry is set to grow. When we see revenue heading backwards in the context of growing industry forecasts, it'd make sense to expect a possible share price decline on the horizon, sending the moderate P/S lower. Unless the the circumstances surrounding the recent medium-term improve, it wouldn't be wrong to expect a a difficult period ahead for the company's shareholders.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Shunfeng International Clean Energy (of which 2 are a bit unpleasant!) you should know about.
