Jiangsu Expressway (HKG:177) May Have Issues Allocating Its Capital
If you're not sure where to start when looking for the next multi-bagger, there are a few key trends you should keep an eye out for. Typically, we'll want to notice a trend of growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and alongside that, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Although, when we looked at Jiangsu Expressway (HKG:177), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
What is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on Jiangsu Expressway is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.075 = CN¥4.2b ÷ (CN¥69b - CN¥12b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2022).
So, Jiangsu Expressway has an ROCE of 7.5%. In absolute terms, that's a low return, but it's much better than the Infrastructure industry average of 6.0%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Jiangsu Expressway Tell Us?
In terms of Jiangsu Expressway's historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last five years, returns on capital have decreased to 7.5% from 15% five years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
The Key Takeaway
In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Jiangsu Expressway is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. However, total returns to shareholders over the last five years have been flat, which could indicate these growth trends potentially aren't accounted for yet by investors. So we think it'd be worthwhile to look further into this stock given the trends look encouraging.
