Here's What's Concerning About Jiangsu Expressway's (HKG:177) Returns On Capital
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. Although, when we looked at Jiangsu Expressway (HKG:177), it didn't seem to tick all of these boxes.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Jiangsu Expressway is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.066 = CN¥3.6b ÷ (CN¥70b - CN¥16b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2022).
Therefore, Jiangsu Expressway has an ROCE of 6.6%. On its own, that's a low figure but it's around the 6.1% average generated by the Infrastructure industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Jiangsu Expressway Tell Us?
When we looked at the ROCE trend at Jiangsu Expressway, we didn't gain much confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 16% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
The Bottom Line On Jiangsu Expressway's ROCE
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Jiangsu Expressway. These growth trends haven't led to growth returns though, since the stock has fallen 25% over the last five years. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
