Returns On Capital At China Mobile (HKG:941) Have Hit The Brakes
What trends should we look for it we want to identify stocks that can multiply in value over the long term? Amongst other things, we'll want to see two things; firstly, a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an expansion in the company's amount of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. With that in mind, the ROCE of China Mobile (HKG:941) looks decent, right now, so lets see what the trend of returns can tell us.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for China Mobile:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.10 = CN¥144b ÷ (CN¥2.0t - CN¥566b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).
So, China Mobile has an ROCE of 10%. That's a pretty standard return and it's in line with the industry average of 10%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For China Mobile Tell Us?
The trend of ROCE doesn't stand out much, but returns on a whole are decent. Over the past five years, ROCE has remained relatively flat at around 10% and the business has deployed 30% more capital into its operations. 10% is a pretty standard return, and it provides some comfort knowing that China Mobile has consistently earned this amount. Over long periods of time, returns like these might not be too exciting, but with consistency they can pay off in terms of share price returns.
The Bottom Line On China Mobile's ROCE
To sum it up, China Mobile has simply been reinvesting capital steadily, at those decent rates of return. And the stock has followed suit returning a meaningful 57% to shareholders over the last five years. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
