China Mobile's (HKG:941) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
China Mobile Limited (HKG:941) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 24th of September to CN¥2.60. This makes the dividend yield 6.4%, which is above the industry average.

China Mobile's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Prior to this announcement, China Mobile's dividend was making up a very large proportion of earnings and perhaps more concerning was that it was 95% of cash flows. Paying out such a high proportion of cash flows certainly exposes the company to cutting the dividend if cash flows were to reduce.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 11.0%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 76%, which is on the higher side, but certainly still feasible.
China Mobile Has A Solid Track Record
Even over a long history of paying dividends, the company's distributions have been remarkably stable. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from CN¥2.63 total annually to CN¥4.41. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 5.3% over that duration. Dividends have grown at a reasonable rate over this period, and without any major cuts in the payment over time, we think this is an attractive combination as it provides a nice boost to shareholder returns.
China Mobile May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Earnings has been rising at 3.7% per annum over the last five years, which admittedly is a bit slow. There are exceptions, but limited earnings growth and a high payout ratio can signal that a company has reached maturity. When a company prefers to pay out cash to its shareholders instead of reinvesting it, this can often say a lot about that company's dividend prospects.
In Summary
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think China Mobile's payments are rock solid. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
