With EPS Growth And More, HKT Trust and HKT (HKG:6823) Is Interesting
Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in HKT Trust and HKT (HKG:6823). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

HKT Trust and HKT's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Over the last three years, HKT Trust and HKT has grown EPS by 5.8% per year. While that sort of growth rate isn't amazing, it does show the business is growing.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). HKT Trust and HKT maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 2.5% to HK$33b. That's a real positive.

Are HKT Trust and HKT Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a HK$80b company like HKT Trust and HKT. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Given insiders own a small fortune of shares, currently valued at HK$747m, they have plenty of motivation to push the business to succeed. That's certainly enough to make me think that management will be very focussed on long term growth.
Is HKT Trust and HKT Worth Keeping An Eye On?
One important encouraging feature of HKT Trust and HKT is that it is growing profits. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. You should always think about risks though.
