Strong week for Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies (HKG:8227) shareholders doesn't alleviate pain of five-year loss

Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies Co., Ltd. (HKG:8227) has rebounded strongly over the last week, with the share price soaring 33%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last half decade have been stomach churning. In fact, the share price has tumbled down a mountain to land 89% lower after that period. It's true that the recent bounce could signal the company is turning over a new leaf, but we are not so sure. The million dollar question is whether the company can justify a long term recovery. We really feel for shareholders in this scenario. It's a good reminder of the importance of diversification, and it's worth keeping in mind there's more to life than money, anyway.

While the last five years has been tough for Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies shareholders, this past week has shown signs of promise. So let's look at the longer term fundamentals and see if they've been the driver of the negative returns.

Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last five years Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies saw its revenue shrink by 20% per year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. So it's not altogether surprising to see the share price down 14% per year in the same time period. This kind of price performance makes us very wary, especially when combined with falling revenue. Of course, the poor performance could mean the market has been too severe selling down. That can happen.

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 13% over one year. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 14% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Xi'an Haitian Antenna Technologies you should be aware of, and 2 of them don't sit too well with us.
