Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Hi Sun Technology (China) (HKG:818). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Fast Is Hi Sun Technology (China) Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Impressively, Hi Sun Technology (China) has grown EPS by 24% per year, compound, in the last three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. While Hi Sun Technology (China) may have maintained EBIT margins over the last year, revenue has fallen. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Are Hi Sun Technology (China) Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Hi Sun Technology (China) insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 36% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I'm always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. In terms of absolute value, insiders have HK$1.4b invested in the business, using the current share price. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Does Hi Sun Technology (China) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

For growth investors like me, Hi Sun Technology (China)'s raw rate of earnings growth is a beacon in the night. Further, the high level of insider ownership impresses me, and suggests that I'm not the only one who appreciates the EPS growth. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value. It is worth noting though that we have found 2 warning signs for Hi Sun Technology (China) (1 is concerning!) that you need to take into consideration.
