Many investors consider it preferable to invest in profitable companies over unprofitable ones, because profitability suggests a business is sustainable. That said, the current statutory profit is not always a good guide to a company's underlying profitability. This article will consider whether i-Control Holdings' (HKG:1402) statutory profits are a good guide to its underlying earnings.

While i-Control Holdings was able to generate revenue of HK$148.2m in the last twelve months, we think its profit result of HK$11.0m was more important. The chart below shows how it has grown revenue over the last three years, but that profit has declined.

Importantly, statutory profits are not always the best tool for understanding a company's true earnings power, so it's well worth examining profits in a little more detail. This article will discuss how unusual items have impacted i-Control Holdings' most recent profit results. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. How Do Unusual Items Influence Profit?

To properly understand i-Control Holdings' profit results, we need to consider the HK$13m gain attributed to unusual items. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. We can see that i-Control Holdings' positive unusual items were quite significant relative to its profit in the year to September 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On i-Control Holdings' Profit Performance

As previously mentioned, i-Control Holdings' large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. For this reason, we think that i-Control Holdings' statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. In further bad news, its earnings per share decreased in the last year. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors. So while earnings quality is important, it's equally important to consider the risks facing i-Control Holdings at this point in time. For example, we've found that i-Control Holdings has 3 warning signs (1 is significant!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
