Capinfo's (HKG:1075) Upcoming Dividend Will Be Larger Than Last Year's

Capinfo Company Limited (HKG:1075) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 25th of September to CN¥0.02. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 5.3%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Capinfo's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Capinfo was paying only paying out a fraction of earnings, but the payment was a massive 163% of cash flows. While the business may be attempting to set a balanced dividend policy, a cash payout ratio this high might expose the dividend to being cut if the business ran into some challenges.

Over the next year, EPS could expand by 9.6% if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 41%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility

Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the dividend has gone from CN¥0.013 total annually to CN¥0.0176. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.1% a year over that time. The dividend has seen some fluctuations in the past, so even though the dividend was raised this year, we should remember that it has been cut in the past.

We Could See Capinfo's Dividend Growing

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. We are encouraged to see that Capinfo has grown earnings per share at 9.6% per year over the past five years. Growth in EPS bodes well for the dividend, as does the low payout ratio that the company is currently reporting.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Just as an example, we've come across 2 warning signs for Capinfo you should be aware of, and 1 of them is a bit unpleasant. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
