E-Star Commercial Management Company Limited (HKG:6668) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 10th of July to CN¥0.13. This takes the dividend yield to 8.9%, which shareholders will be pleased with.

E-Star Commercial Management's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Prior to this announcement, E-Star Commercial Management's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 41% of free cash flows. Since the dividend is just paying out cash to shareholders, we care more about the cash payout ratio from which we can see plenty is being left over for reinvestment in the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 40.2% over the next year. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 55%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
E-Star Commercial Management's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
The track record isn't the longest, but we are already seeing a bit of instability in the payments. Since 2021, the annual payment back then was CN¥0.0363, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CN¥0.12. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 49% over that duration. Dividends have grown rapidly over this time, but with cuts in the past we are not certain that this stock will be a reliable source of income in the future.
E-Star Commercial Management May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 4.8% per year. Earnings are not growing quickly at all, and the company is paying out most of its profit as dividends. That's fine as far as it goes, but we're less enthusiastic as this often signals that the dividend is likely to grow slower in the future.
In Summary
In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
