Logan Group (HKG:3380) shareholder returns have been incredible, earning 375% in 3 years
We think that it's fair to say that the possibility of finding fantastic multi-year winners is what motivates many investors. You won't get it right every time, but when you do, the returns can be truly splendid. For example, the Logan Group Company Limited (HKG:3380) share price is up a whopping 375% in the last three years, a handsome return for long term holders. It's also good to see the share price up 48% over the last quarter.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.
Logan Group isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally hope to see good revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
Logan Group actually saw its revenue drop by 28% per year over three years. This is in stark contrast to the strong share price growth of 68%, compound, per year. This clear lack of correlation between revenue and share price is surprising to see in a money losing company. So there is a serious possibility that some holders are counting their chickens before they hatch.

A Different Perspective
It's good to see that Logan Group has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 43% in the last twelve months. That certainly beats the loss of about 13% per year over the last half decade. The long term loss makes us cautious, but the short term TSR gain certainly hints at a brighter future. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Logan Group better, we need to consider many other factors.
