Some have more dollars than sense, they say, so even companies that have no revenue, no profit, and a record of falling short, can easily find investors. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings (HKG:512). Even if the shares are fully valued today, most capitalists would recognize its profits as the demonstration of steady value generation. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings's EPS has grown 36% each year, compound, over three years. If the company can sustain that sort of growth, we'd expect shareholders to come away winners.

Careful consideration of revenue growth and earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margins can help inform a view on the sustainability of the recent profit growth. Unfortunately, China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings's revenue dropped 3.6% last year, but the silver lining is that EBIT margins improved from 21% to 29%. That falls short of ideal.

Are China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So we're pleased to report that China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings insiders own a meaningful share of the business. Actually, with 48% of the company to their names, insiders are profoundly invested in the business. I'm always comforted by solid insider ownership like this, as it implies that those running the business are genuinely motivated to create shareholder value. And their holding is extremely valuable at the current share price, totalling HK$11b. Now that's what I call some serious skin in the game!

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. I discovered that the median total compensation for the CEOs of companies like China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings with market caps between HK$16b and HK$50b is about HK$5.3m.

The CEO of China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings only received HK$2.5m in total compensation for the year ending . That's clearly well below average, so at a glance, that arrangement seems generous to shareholders, and points to a modest remuneration culture. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Should You Add China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings To Your Watchlist?

You can't deny that China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings has grown its earnings per share at a very impressive rate. That's attractive. If you need more convincing beyond that EPS growth rate, don't forget about the reasonable remuneration and the high insider ownership. Each to their own, but I think all this makes China Grand Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Holdings look rather interesting indeed.
