SSY Group's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Prior to this announcement, SSY Group's dividend was only 38% of earnings, however it was paying out 161% of free cash flows. The business might be trying to strike a balance between returning cash to shareholders and reinvesting back into the business, but this high of a payout ratio could definitely force the dividend to be cut if the company runs into a bit of a tough spot.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 57.6%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 28%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.
Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from HK$0.04 total annually to HK$0.17. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 16% per annum over that time. Despite the rapid growth in the dividend over the past number of years, we have seen the payments go down the past as well, so that makes us cautious.
The Dividend Has Growth Potential
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. SSY Group has impressed us by growing EPS at 7.8% per year over the past five years. SSY Group definitely has the potential to grow its dividend in the future with earnings on an uptrend and a low payout ratio.
In Summary
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think SSY Group will make a great income stock. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. We don't think SSY Group is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
