Qingci Games (HKG:6633) spikes 58% this week, taking one-year gains to 137%
Unfortunately, investing is risky - companies can and do go bankrupt. But if you pick the right business to buy shares in, you can make more than you can lose. For example, the Qingci Games Inc. (HKG:6633) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 129%. It's also good to see the share price up 84% over the last quarter. Qingci Games hasn't been listed for long, so it's still not clear if it is a long term winner.
After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Over the last twelve months Qingci Games went from profitable to unprofitable. While some may see this as temporary, we're a skeptical bunch, and so we're a little surprised to see the share price go up. It may be that the company has done well on other metrics.
We doubt the modest 1.6% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. Unfortunately Qingci Games' fell 68% over twelve months. So the fundamental metrics don't provide an obvious explanation for the share price gain.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Qingci Games the TSR over the last 1 year was 137%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Qingci Games shareholders have gained 137% over the last year, including dividends. And the share price momentum remains respectable, with a gain of 84% in the last three months. This suggests the company is continuing to win over new investors. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Qingci Games better, we need to consider many other factors.
