Wisdom Sports Group's(HKG:1661) Share Price Is Down 91% Over The Past Five Years.
It is doubtless a positive to see that the Wisdom Sports Group (HKG:1661) share price has gained some 171% in the last three months. But will that heal all the wounds inflicted over 5 years of declines? Unlikely. Like a ship taking on water, the share price has sunk 91% in that time. While the recent increase might be a green shoot, we're certainly hesitant to rejoice. The fundamental business performance will ultimately determine if the turnaround can be sustained.
While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

Wisdom Sports Group wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.
Over half a decade Wisdom Sports Group reduced its trailing twelve month revenue by 24% for each year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. So it's not that strange that the share price dropped 14% per year in that period. We don't think this is a particularly promising picture. Ironically, that behavior could create an opportunity for the contrarian investor - but only if there are good reasons to predict a brighter future.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We've already covered Wisdom Sports Group's share price action, but we should also mention its total shareholder return (TSR). Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Wisdom Sports Group's TSR, which was a 87% drop over the last 5 years, was not as bad as the share price return.
A Different Perspective
We're pleased to report that Wisdom Sports Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 82% over one year. That certainly beats the loss of about 13% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Wisdom Sports Group is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
