Why Investors Shouldn't Be Surprised By Meitu, Inc.'s (HKG:1357) 26% Share Price Surge
Those holding Meitu, Inc. (HKG:1357) shares would be relieved that the share price has rebounded 26% in the last thirty days, but it needs to keep going to repair the recent damage it has caused to investor portfolios. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 9.3% isn't as impressive.
Following the firm bounce in price, when almost half of the companies in Hong Kong's Interactive Media and Services industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.6x, you may consider Meitu as a stock not worth researching with its 5.3x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

How Has Meitu Performed Recently?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as steep as Meitu's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the industry decidedly.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 30% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 122% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 35% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 11% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we can see why Meitu is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Meitu's P/S
The strong share price surge has lead to Meitu's P/S soaring as well. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Meitu maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Interactive Media and Services industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
