Is United Company RUSAL International (HKG:486) A Risky Investment?

David Iben put it well when he said, 'Volatility is not a risk we care about. What we care about is avoiding the permanent loss of capital.' It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. We can see that United Company RUSAL, International Public Joint-Stock Company (HKG:486) does use debt in its business. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more common (but still painful) scenario is that it has to raise new equity capital at a low price, thus permanently diluting shareholders. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

How Much Debt Does United Company RUSAL International Carry?

The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that at June 2025 United Company RUSAL International had debt of US$8.50b, up from US$7.69b in one year. However, because it has a cash reserve of US$1.34b, its net debt is less, at about US$7.16b.

How Strong Is United Company RUSAL International's Balance Sheet?

According to the last reported balance sheet, United Company RUSAL International had liabilities of US$8.82b due within 12 months, and liabilities of US$3.13b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of US$1.34b and US$2.15b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities total US$8.45b more than the combination of its cash and short-term receivables.

This is a mountain of leverage relative to its market capitalization of US$9.62b. Should its lenders demand that it shore up the balance sheet, shareholders would likely face severe dilution.

View our latest analysis for United Company RUSAL International

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). Thus we consider debt relative to earnings both with and without depreciation and amortization expenses.

While United Company RUSAL International's debt to EBITDA ratio (5.0) suggests that it uses some debt, its interest cover is very weak, at 1.6, suggesting high leverage. It seems clear that the cost of borrowing money is negatively impacting returns for shareholders, of late. On a slightly more positive note, United Company RUSAL International grew its EBIT at 18% over the last year, further increasing its ability to manage debt. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. But it is future earnings, more than anything, that will determine United Company RUSAL International's ability to maintain a healthy balance sheet going forward. So if you want to see what the professionals think, you might find this free report on analyst profit forecasts to be interesting.

Finally, a business needs free cash flow to pay off debt; accounting profits just don't cut it. So it's worth checking how much of that EBIT is backed by free cash flow. Considering the last three years, United Company RUSAL International actually recorded a cash outflow, overall. Debt is far more risky for companies with unreliable free cash flow, so shareholders should be hoping that the past expenditure will produce free cash flow in the future.

Our View

To be frank both United Company RUSAL International's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow and its track record of covering its interest expense with its EBIT make us rather uncomfortable with its debt levels. But on the bright side, its EBIT growth rate is a good sign, and makes us more optimistic. Overall, it seems to us that United Company RUSAL International's balance sheet is really quite a risk to the business. So we're almost as wary of this stock as a hungry kitten is about falling into its owner's fish pond: once bitten, twice shy, as they say. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. Be aware that United Company RUSAL International is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
