For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

If, on the other hand, you like companies that have revenue, and even earn profits, then you may well be interested in Yip's Chemical Holdings (HKG:408). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. While a well funded company may sustain losses for years, unless its owners have an endless appetite for subsidizing the customer, it will need to generate a profit eventually, or else breathe its last breath.

How Fast Is Yip's Chemical Holdings Growing?

As one of my mentors once told me, share price follows earnings per share (EPS). That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. Over the last three years, Yip's Chemical Holdings has grown EPS by 13% per year. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). While Yip's Chemical Holdings may have maintained EBIT margins over the last year, revenue has fallen. And that does make me a little more cautious of the stock.

Yip's Chemical Holdings isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of HK$1.7b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are Yip's Chemical Holdings Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Yip's Chemical Holdings insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 48% of the shares, making insiders a very influential shareholder group. I'm reassured by this kind of alignment, as it suggests the business will be run for the benefit of shareholders. In terms of absolute value, insiders have HK$798m invested in the business, using the current share price. That should be more than enough to keep them focussed on creating shareholder value!

Is Yip's Chemical Holdings Worth Keeping An Eye On?

As I already mentioned, Yip's Chemical Holdings is a growing business, which is what I like to see. Just as polish makes silverware pop, the high level of insider ownership enhances my enthusiasm for this growth. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on. Even so, be aware that Yip's Chemical Holdings is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis , you should know about...
