MMG Limited (HKG:1208) Stocks Shoot Up 27% But Its P/E Still Looks Reasonable
Despite an already strong run, MMG Limited (HKG:1208) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 27% in the last thirty days. The last month tops off a massive increase of 205% in the last year.
Since its price has surged higher, MMG may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 26.6x, since almost half of all companies in Hong Kong have P/E ratios under 12x and even P/E's lower than 7x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Recent times have been advantageous for MMG as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is MMG's Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as MMG's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 301%. However, this wasn't enough as the latest three year period has seen a very unpleasant 1.2% drop in EPS in aggregate. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the nine analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 23% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to only expand by 14% per annum, which is noticeably less attractive.
In light of this, it's understandable that MMG's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
What We Can Learn From MMG's P/E?
MMG's P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that MMG maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
