Reflecting on IRC's (HKG:1029) Share Price Returns Over The Last Three Years
This month, we saw the IRC Limited (HKG:1029) up an impressive 32%. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last three years have been disappointing. Tragically, the share price declined 55% in that time. So it's good to see it climbing back up. The rise has some hopeful, but turnarounds are often precarious.

IRC wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. When a company doesn't make profits, we'd generally expect to see good revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one does expect good top-line growth.
In the last three years, IRC saw its revenue grow by 30% per year, compound. That's well above most other pre-profit companies. The share price has moved in quite the opposite direction, down 16% over that time, a bad result. It seems likely that the market is worried about the continual losses. When we see revenue growth, paired with a falling share price, we can't help wonder if there is an opportunity for those who are willing to dig deeper.

A Different Perspective
IRC shareholders are down 2.7% for the year, but the market itself is up 15%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 9% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. To that end, you should be aware of the 2 warning signs we've spotted with IRC .
